THE MUSIC FACTOR

Completely volunteer based, Music Factor Project is a grassroots group of involved and informed parents, educators, artists and businesspeople. We value arts education and actively seek to enhance educational experiences for our students. We strive to provide mentorship and performance opportunity where it was not available before.

In times of economic hardship and budget cuts, expenditures in the arts are often the first to be reduced or eliminated.  In music programs, performance venues and equipment fall into disrepair or simply are worn with age and there is no means to repair, replace or upgrade them.  Uniforms, music, even the instruments students play may no longer be of use and may eventually become unavailable to them at all.  Travel is cancelled to performances, workshops and competitions or the cost transferred to the families of the students.  In some schools music education ceases to exist.

While this is disappointing to the music enthusiast, it should be of greater concern to academia as a whole. Several studies have linked music education to improved math skills.  Students who are also instrumentalists often show higher overall academic performance and test scores, are better citizens with fewer disciplinary issues and attend colleges in far greater numbers than students who have never played instruments.

We need to keep music in our schools.

We need to provide opportunities for every student to explore some aspect of music education.

We need to foster the development of musical skills and appreciation for all forms of music in our students.

As a community, we can help Enumclaw schools provide exceptional experiences in music through:

  • Mentoring
  • Professional performances
  • Workshops
  • Instrument availability
  • Accessible materials

Through our efforts we can keep music in the lives of our students.
